Obamacare

Matthew Rushing
Despite Government assurances, some could see insurance costs soar under Obamacare By: Jim Angle published September 27th 2013, FoxNews.com

In three days we will know if Obamacare will pass or be turned down, many in the government say that it will help everyone and lower insurance costs, but this article says otherwise. In the debates about Obamacare they told us that rates would go down but they cherry picked their facts to only cover those who are in the low income bracket, the new laws make many more things mandatory for the insurance companies to cover which will actually raise the rates on many middle income people, costs may soar up to 99% for men and 55% for women. Studies also show that there may be a shocking rise in deductibles even for the cheapest plan deductibles may reach 6,000 dollars. I think that this will be devastating to our economy because it will cause many people to have to spend much more of their income on insurance and possibly go into more debt and reliance on the government.

This week in class

Matthew Rushing
This week in economics we learned about businesses and many things concerning the governments involvement in economy. First we learned about different business types and looked at the pros and cons of different business setups. Then we went on to learn about public vs. private goods where we learned that goods that if all the benefit comes from the consumer and the producer bears all the cost then it is a private good, and then we learned that if people who don't cover the cost of a product that they benefit from then it is a public good. We also learned that if there is a public good that we have deemed necessary or very helpful then the company may get a subsidy. I disagree with most of our government subsidies because they all tend to be given to the companies that have good lawyers not the companies that actually need subsidies to survive.

Apple to assemble in America

Matthew Rushing
Apple to assemble Mac book pros in the US by: Gregory Ferinstein Monday June 10th 2013
Apple is following through on their promise to assemble their new line of Mac book pros in America. This new line of computer production is planning to move the production of Mac book pros to their new production plant located in Texas. The number of production related jobs have been dropping drastically since the 1960's, it went from 29% of jobs in the 60's to only 9% of jobs in 2011 but due to new lines of production in America we have seen a bump in production related jobs from 2010-2012 and those numbers are expected to rise. I think that it is a great thing that this new line of production is coming into the US because it brings lots of jobs, gives people experience in work and stimulates economic growth in the http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/10/apple-to-manufacture-mac-pro-in-the-u-s/

Walmart and Washington D.C in minimum wage showdown, by: Reuters, September 6th 2013
In this article we are told that Washington is pushing to raise the minimum wage for large companies that are located in the Washington D.C area. This raise in wages can have a large effect on the economy, if the bill passes then Walmart may not move its business into the Washington area and it may cost the Washington area 1800 jobs. If the bill doesn't pass then Walmart will move into the area and that will create a lot of jobs in an area that is currently trying to battle unemployment. I personally think that they shouldn't pass the bill so that the Walmart does move into the area which will create a lot of jobs for the unemployed people in the area. Another effect not passing the bill can have is the attraction of more large, job-rich companies which can really help the economy in the D.C area to grow and decrease unemployment rates.
